Some western visitor to Shamar Rinpoche’s monastery left a cassette tape of this John Denver song with Rinpoche when he was a young monk, and it became his favorite song. The band is the Bodhi Band made up of BodhiPathers from all over who revise favorite songs to reflect Buddhist teachings and who play every year at the annual gathering celebrations.

COUNTRY ROADS, BRING HIM HOME

(Composed in a slightly hidden way)

Almost heaven, sweet Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River.
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, growin’ like a breeze.

CHORUS : Country roads, bring Him home
To the place He belongs:
Sweet Virginia, mountain mama
bring Him home, country roads.

All my mem’ries gather ’round Him:
Mind training, stranger to no one.
Deep and lightly, dancing in the sky*
Taste of youthful moonshine**, teardrop in my eye.

CHORUS
I hear her voice, in the mornin’ hours she calls Him
This song will remind Him of his home far a-way
And walkin’ up the path I make the wish that
He’ll come home some happy day, happy day……

CHORUS

*Kacho Wangpo (second Shamarpa)
** Gampopa
